Mezzo violin (British nomenclature, treble violin).

Technical description: Soundboard of spruce; back, ribs, neck and head of maple; tail-gut protector and fingerboard of ebony; pegs, tailpiece, chin-rest and endpin of rosewood. Standard violin tuning. Soundboard of medium width even grain, 16.5mm arch. Dyed pear/poplar/dyed pear purfling. Patchy orange varnish. Small unplugged hole at top of soundboard to where it was clamped to the top block. Deep figure on the ribs and two piece back, the figure on the back up in the centre and down at the edges. Back arch 15mm. Plugged holes on the back at the top and bottom set off centre, the top hole to the treble side, bottom hole to the bass side. One piece neck and head with a lighter figure. Neck 131 long; fingerboard 274 long, 24.7 wide at nut, 40.8 wide at bottom. Repair History: Damage to table in 1978 repaired soon afterwards.
