Clarinet in A

This instrument is associated with Chas. King, from W. Surrey Regiment. It is a clarinet made of African blackwood in four sections (barrel, upper and lower joints, and bell) with nickel-silver ferrules and keywork. It has thirteen cylinder-cup keys, mounted in posts with rods, with flat and needle springs attached to keys and posts, with cork paddings. Originally, this clarinet had 14 keys, as there is a pair of posts for a side key (probably F4/C6), but there is no key and the tonehole was plugged/closed on purpose with cork, which indicates a preference for the 13-key simple system. There is a brille key at the lower joint (two ring-key) and the register key wraps around the body. The tenon joints are wrapped with thread and cork. The wood surface of the instrument was covered in varnish. The bell ferrule was pressed on the wooden flare. The mouthpiece is made of wood, and there is a silver-plated ligature and cap. Nominal pitch: A.
