bagpipe

Scottish Lowland or Border pipe; bagpipe. Bellows-blown bagpipe with conical chanter, three cylindrical drones in a common stock, bag, blowpipe and bellows. The chanter has seven finger holes, one thumb hole above the first finger hole and two lateral vent holes, and it terminates in an ivory sole. The chanter and drone stocks have brass ferrules at the sockets. The drone stock is stamped 'HOW'. Two tenor drones, each in two joints with two brass ferrules, one at the rim. The single bass drone is in three joints, originally with three brass ferrules, although the rim ferrule is absent. All three drones terminate in short cylindrical bell sections. The leather bag is of rectangular form.The bellows are attached to bag by a turned wooden connector pipe with a brass ferrule at the bag end. The bellows are of leather with wooden boards. The air intake is a circular hole on one face with an internal clack valve beneath.
