Chang; dulcimer
One dulcimer, chang. The body of wood, the sides inlaid with patterns of triangles and lozenges in light wood, with white plastic stringing, and a motif of a lyre inlaid on the back. The instrument is triple strung throughout, with chessmen bridges connected by brass rods. Twelve bass courses of strings are tuned from bridges on the right hand side; the six lowest courses are of overwound wire, the six highest courses of plain wire. Thirteen treble courses of strings are tuned from bridges on the left hand side; the six topmost stings also run over bridges on the right centre. An overdamper on the right hand side is applied to the seven lowest courses of bass strings and seven lowest courses of treble strings. A pedal operated underdamper, consisting of a length of plastic foam adhered to a piece of wood, is applied to the six topmost courses of treble strings and five topmost courses of bass strings. The hole in the wooden baseboard is for the pedal wire.
