'Aeolian' pitch-pipes, mouth blown free reed instruments. Thirteen cylindrical metal pipes (Horniman Museum numbers M11.5.50/1.1-13), each containing a free reed and giving a note of the chromatic scale from C4 (c') to C5 (c''). Each pipe has a semicircular mouth hole, which occupies half of the proximal face. The other half is stamped with the note name. The side of each pipe is stamped along its length:' AEOLIAN PITCH PIPE'; beneath this and encircling a harp symbol: 'T.WALKER/INVENTOR'. Original cardboard box with detachable lid (M11.5.50/14 and 15 respectively), a prismic shape with flat front and back faces and curved sides. The lid is a sleeve which fits over approximately the top two thirds of the base, which is narrowed to accommodate it. The inside is divided into 13 square compartments, apart from where the edge is curved, in three rows, the front and back of four compartments, the middle of five. The sides of the case and the lid each have two decorative gold bands in a foliate design, and the front of the base has a centrally positioned star between them.
