English-system concertina. Flat rosewood ends, 5.88in/149mm across parallel sides; simple fretwork with pine backing. 32 ivory buttons, black accidentals, stamped. Square-end nickel reeds. Four-fold green leather bellows with gold star papers and leather internal baffles. Later brown leather straps with nickel screws. Reed pan stamped: J Scates; Oval paper label: 'Joseph Scates, 85 Renshaw Street, Liverpool from New Bond St. London'. Serial number 332.
