Sahnai; oboe

?ahn?? (shahnai), conical oboe. The quadruple reed is approx 15 mm wide; one side is broken and is very loose. The staple for the reed is wound with blue and white thread. A wooden needle 71 mm long is tied to one end of the white thread. The top end of the wooden body is covered with a conical metal ferrule 20mm long. The bell is of a yellow metal coated with a white metal. It is shaped into bands at the base of the body before flaring widely. The body has seven finger holes which are large and blackened around the insides, suggesting they have been burned having been carved out. The holes form a roughly straight line, but this is not parallel with the plane of the body and veers to the player's left at the distal end.
