Concertina

English-system concertina. Flat rosewood ends, 5.75in/146mm across parallel sides; simple fretwork with pine backing. Ends of 'action within frames' construction, with 1.25in/319mm deep sides covering and containing the reed pan and its cradle. 33 ivory buttons: 16 left, 17 right, with black-cored accidentals. Square-end brass reeds with reed pan and reeds stamped with note names. Action has complex brass levers, also stamped with note names, which are fixed to buttons by pivoting pins. The lever pivots are screwed to base of action board, and the springs are blued steel leaf springs screwed to upper part of lever. The bone pallets have their note names stamped on the adjacent action board. Four-fold green leather bellows, with 0.38in/9.7mm of the bellows frame exposed; embossed gold-star papers. Remnants of right-hand strap, entire left-hand strap, with two nickel strap screws, one labelled 'Grundy 1939'. Straps on brass inserts, the leather-clad finger rest of simple L-shaped brass, without curved end. One of the circular thumbstrap plates has hand engraved: ‘GRUNDY/1937’. Oval silver plaque label: ‘By His Majesty’s Letters Patent/C. Wheatstone/Inventor/20 Conduit St., Regent St./London’. Serial number: 103.
