Double clarinet; zummara

Double clarinet, local name possibly zumm?ra. Two parallel bone pipes with almost flat upper surfaces. Six round finger holes are cut into each pipe and positioned in parallel pairs. Black wax joins the pipes and also covers the proximal ends to form a bulb, into which two narrow cane pipes are inserted, each closed at the top by a node and with an upcut idioglotal reed carved into the front surface. A narrow cord is tied round the pipes near the distal end, passing beneath the wax on the front. The front surfaces of the bones are decorated with incised and painted lines forming single or double crosses between each finger hole.
