rattle

Human-faced rattle made of alder wood, string, fibre (vegetable). Roughly spherical in form, it is constructed in two halves with a 'D' handle formed below the chin. The two halves are held together with string and shredded cedar bark. On one half a face has been finely carved with features painted in black and red. The reverse has the features of owl painted also in red and black. A series of holes along the top of the rattle, on the carved side, suggest a hair fringe was formerly attached.
