mandolin

Mandolin, made of wood, with tortoiseshell, bone and mother-of-pearl inlay, metal frets and fittings for the eight metal strings (one string missing) in four double courses, attached to metal pins at the base. The bowl with multiple ribs of mid-brown wood, the joins with strips of pale wood, the whole framed in dark wood, the front with inlay of black and pale wood strips round the edges and round the sound hole, an inlaid shaped tortoiseshell scratch-plate below the sound hole and a further piece of shaped tortoiseshell attached at the base. Bone saddle on the bridge, bone bar at the top of the finger-board, bone tuning peg heads. Mother-of-pearl discs inlaid in fingerboard. Maker's printed paper label for Pietro Tonelli glued inside bowl, visible through sound hole.
