Shawm

Technical description: Rosewood, in three sections (the main body of the instrument, separate reed well and bell). The reed well section slips into the body of the instrument with a long fork arrangement designed to give the acoustical effect of a conical bore in an instrument where the bore is more cylindrical. The fork extends to a little above the narrowest point after which the bore expands only very gradually. There are german silver rings at the top of the body of the instrument and at the bell. The bell is widely flared. Seven finger holes, none is displaced sideways. There are also seven vent holes in the bell, three at the front and two at each side.

  • Measurements:346 (including reed well).
