Free reed instrument
Harmoni-cor or hautbois nouveau. Mouth-blown free reed instrument. Walnut body with brass metal work plated with white metal and finger buttons of horn and ivory. The swan-necked crook is attached via a wooden crook receiver to a pallet plate that is positioned towards the top of the trumpet-style valve assemblies. The twenty-five pistons are arranged in two rows as a piano keyboard, each admitting air to a free reed, and are connected at the bottom to the wooden body which terminates in a slightly flared bell. Inscription stamped both on the bell and on the side of the instrument: RIVIERE & HAWKES/28 LEICESTER SQRE,/LONDON
