Fiddle

Fandur or Black sea fiddle, bowed lute. The long body, the neck and the head are carved from one piece of wood, with an inverted heart shaped pegbox. Two small holes are drilled into the ribs on both sides. The soundboard is pierced by five holes arranged in a U shape and also has two C-shaped sound holes. The edge of the sound board is protected by a thin sliver of cane. The tailpiece is attached by gut to a bone button. A fingerboard is glued flat to the neck and soundboard. Three mallet-headed pegs are set in the face of the pegbox. Three gut strings are led through holes above the nut. The pegs are split at the ends, not bored. The whole instrument is decorated with a punched pattern of crosses. The head and fingerboard are also decorated with punched circles and there is scratched decoration on the soundboard.
