Bell; zhong

Zhong, externally struck suspended bell of bronze. The body is of elliptical cross-section, with a bell-mouth that is concave and slightly angled in profile. There are three rows of three projecting studs, and ornate geometrical engravings on the four faces. The bell gives two pitches, depending upon the point at which it is struck. The cylindrical handle has a collar two thirds of the way down its length. A suspension hook projects from the front of the collar.
