Transverse flutes; ryuteki
Ry?teki, transverse flute. The bamboo body has a cylindrical bore. The seven finger holes and the embouchure are all slightly ovular. The proximal end is stopped, the inside of the stopper covered with white beeswax immediately above the embouchure to facilitate tuning. There are ten bands of cherry bark around the instrument including one between each finger hole. The bark is bound with twine and covered with lacquer or imitation lacquer. In fitted wooden case (Horniman Museum number: M24.8.56/91b) with the komabue transverse flute (Horniman Museum number: M24.8.56/91a).
