Cylindrical drum; side drum
Side drum, used by the Russian navy, double membrane cylindrical drum. Copper alloy shell with applied brass anchor motif. The heads lapped over flesh hoops and secured by deep counterhoops, painted black. Rope-tensioning, with leather tug ears, and an additional length of rope is wrapped round the lower part of the body and reverse looped through each section of tensioning. Screw-tensioned snare. Label 'This drum is a Russian Naval drum/It was brought from the battle of Salaman in the Crimean War in 1856 by John Elder and given to Charles Randolph/(he was of Randolph Elder & Co. - shipping firm)'; reverse gives donor/vendor's address.
