Mawangdui Tomb 3 - Wooden Bianzhong (10 bells and a wooden frame) (Wooden bells)

The frame of the bianzhong falls apart. The base is cracked and misshapen. Two wooden mallets have only their heads left. The set is made of wood. This set has 10 bells of varying size. Their shapes were modelled on bronze bells. The body of each wooden bell is solid in the middle with an olive-shaped cross-section. The upper surface of each bell is flat and has a small column attached to it as a handle. There are no studs decorating the body of each bell. The mouth of each bell is curved. The wooden frame consists of one horizontal beam, two pillars and two square bases. One pillar is 20.4cm long (in which: length of the body is 18.9cm and length of the rod is 1.5cm); the other pillar is 20.1cm long (in which: length of the body is 18.6cm and length of the rod is 1.5cm). The two ends of each pillar are shaped like squares, each side of which has a length of 1.0cm. The middle section of each pillar is shaped like a square with cutaway corners. The horizontal beam is 39.9cm long, 0.9cm high and 1.0cm wide. One of the rectangle bases is 6.9cm long, 6.2cm wide and 2.8cm high. The other base is 6.5cm long, 4.7cm wide and 2.7cm high. The two heads of the wooden mallets are short and of cylindrical shape. One of the heads is 1.9cm long with a cross-section of 0.9-1.3cm and the other one is 2.0cm long with a cross-section of 0.9-1.1cm. The bells, the wooden frame and the mallets all have a plain design with no decorative patterns.
